Have You Ever Wondered Why BTS Really Call James Corden “Papa Mochi?” Not Even The Members Can Agree On One Reason
Whether you are like BTS‘s RM and have forgiven James Corden for his comment about ARMYs or not, there is no denying that there are some very memorable moments when they all get together. Every time the group appears on The Late Late Show with James Corden, ARMYs are treated to some hilarious moments…
In particular, when the group appeared on an episode of “Carpool Karaoke” with the host back in 2020, one moment stood out the most and became globally known amongst both BTS fans and viewers of the show.
During the video, James Corden pointed out that one of Jimin‘s nicknames was Mochi, which is a kind of Japanese rice cake. Jimin then created an iconic moment by calling James Corden “Papa Mochi,” and that was the start of a legacy…
Since then, the boys have appeared several times on the show. Each time, they have referred to James Corden as “Papa Mochi.” Yet, something changed after the group appeared in another video for “Crosswalk Concert.” After meeting some unexpected fans on the road, the members performed some of their classic songs on the road.
Before the performance started, the members discussed how they felt about the performance and explained how they were excited about the concept. Jimin then explained that their friendship with Corden had changed, and they needed something to show that.
He’s not just a Papa Mochi. He’s now a… Friend Mochi.
— Jimin
After Jimin’s announcement, Jungkook asked a question that has been on a lot of people’s minds. He asked, “By the way, why do we call him Mochi?”
Mochi is known for being a sweet dessert as, despite being a rice cake, it usually contains ice cream and is eaten after meals or for snacks. Because of this, Jimin explained that the reason he picked the nickname for James all those years ago was, “Because, he’s so sweet!”
There is no faulting Jimin’s reasoning, but it seems as if some of the other members were slightly confused by it. Oldest member Jin had his own reason, adding, “I thought it’s because he looks like mochi?”
This time, it looked like the members agreed more with Jin’s idea, with V adding, “It makes sense,” and even Suga pointing out that James does have the look of a mochi.
No matter which members’ reason you choose to follow, they both make sense, and it sounds adorable when the group calls James the nickname. You can read more about the lucky ARMYs who interacted with BTS while they were filming this segment below.
