BTS’s RM, Red Velvet’s Joy, and Suzy Listed As “Verified” Feminists On Anti-Feminist Website
Following South Korean Olympic Archer An San and MC JaeJae‘s feminist controversies, an anti-feminist site listed BTS‘s RM, Red Velvet‘s Joy, and Suzy as feminists.
The website, known as Check Femi, has since been deleted, and it categorized public figures into three groups of “suspected,” “verified,” and “vanguard.” The website’s manager stated that the categorization system was created to help people “pick out feminists from the general public” and decide which celebrities to follow or not follow.
The site’s manager also stated that the website does not differentiate between radical feminists and those who are “recognized positively for working for improved rights for women.”
RM, Joy, and Suzy were all listed as “verified” feminists due to showing support for feminism in the past. South Korea’s president, Moon Jae In, was listed as a “vanguard” feminist, and Girl’s Day‘s Lee Hyeri and actor Jung Woo Sung were listed as “suspected” feminists.
RM once revealed he read Kim Ji Young, Born 1982, a feminist novel, during a live broadcast. Red Velvet’s Irene also read the book and anti-feminist fans burned her photocards after finding out she’d read it.
Joy once wore a “We Should All Be Feminists” shirt, which angered anti-feminist fans.
Suzy also angered anti-feminists by promoting a Blue House petition in support of a YouTuber who was sexually harassed during a photo shoot.
The website was deleted as of 1:30 PM (KST) on August 13. Before the website was deleted, netizens asked the website to stop judging people’s “mindsets and virtues through just a small number of comments made in the past” and questioned why “being a feminist is something to be pinpointed from people and socially corner them.”
