DongA Ilbo Claims JTBC’s CCTV Footage Isn’t BTS Suga’s Drunk Driving Incident – Reveals New Alleged Correct Footage

DongA Ilbo reports new information on the case.

The police investigation into Suga’s drunk driving incident has now ended.

BTS‘s Suga is currently under investigation for a DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol). According to reports from several Korean news outlets, he was discovered after he fell from his electric scooter in Hannam-dong while intoxicated. Test results showed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level that greatly exceeded the legal limit.

Around 11:10 PM on August 6, three policemen who had been patrolling the area around Nine One Hannam passed by the front gates of the apartment complex where Suga had fallen as he lost balance while trying to make a turn inside the gates. The police picked up his fallen helmet and approached him to give it back. In this process, they confirmed that he had been drinking, and did a test on him in real time.

DongA Ilbo further reports that Suga had been drinking with his acquaintances around 9 PM near the Hannam Intersection, before continuing to drink at his personal studio nearby. He then rode his electric scooter home around 11 PM. The scooter had been parked at his personal studio before that. The studio is located about 500 meters from Nine One Hannam.

DongA Ilbo makes further claims that a particular previous CCTV footage was not actually of Suga, given that the previous footage showed the vehicle moving towards Namsan rather than towards Suga’s home.

Although DongA Ilbo did not specify which outlet it was that allegedly aired the wrong footage, due to DongA Ilbo’s specific descriptions netizens have named a report by JTBC.

  • “They said the CCTV isn’t him.”
  • “So he drank twice.”
  • “Riding his scooter on the sidewalk… He’s really insane.”
  • “So you’re saying that the CCTV where he’s driving on the main road is false, but the one with him on the sidewalk is right?”
  • “The CCTV with him falling on the sidewalk is correct, while the very first one of him on the main road isn’t him.”
  • “So the very first CCTV isn’t him. Oh but he drank while having dinner, then drank again at his personal studio? If he drank up to 0.227% alcohol in his body while alone, then he could be addicted to alcohol.”
  • “He’s still a public service worker. Would he go to the studio to work? He probably just went there to drink.”

On August 7, 2024 (KST), major Korean news outlet JTBC aired CCTV footage of who they claimed to be Suga on their nightly news. In the now-deleted footage, an electric scooter is seen driving on the main road before being aided by the police. This footage has since been called out as false by netizens after DongA Ilbo’s claim.
