BTS’s Suga Personally Apologizes For Drunk Driving Incident

In his apology, Suga refers to the electric scooter as an electric kickboard. Yongsan Police Station has since clarified that Suga was driving an “electric scooter with a seat,” not an electric kickboard. Suga has now issued a second apology, and the police investigation into his drunk driving incident has ended.
BTS‘s Suga issued an apology regarding his recent drunk driving incident, which involved an electric scooter. Breathalyzer test results showed that Suga’s blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.
Apart from a statement issued by his company, Suga also personally apologized for the incident through Weverse.
Hello, this is Suga. I’m feeling extremely heavy-hearted and sorry to have to come to you all over such disappointing matter. I rode an electric kickboard home last night, after having drinks with dinner. I thought that it was a close distance, and I did not realize that you could not operate an electric kickboard after drinking. As such, I violated traffic rules. I parked in front of the main gates to my home, and I fell over by myself in that process. A police was nearby, and through the results of a breathalyzer test, my license was revoked and I paid a fine. Although no one was hurt, neither was any property harmed in the matter, as this is inexcusably something I have to take responsibility for, I bow my head in apology to everyone. I apologize to those who were hurt by my irresponsible and wrong actions, and I will be even more careful with my actions to prevent such matters from occurring in the future.

The Yongsan Police Station, however, has since clarified that Suga has not lost his driver’s license yet—contradicting both BigHit Music’s initial statement and Suga’s apology. According to the police, the investigation is still ongoing.
Currently, no fine has been imposed yet, and the process for revoking his driver’s license is still underway. There are currently no plans for additional summons or investigation of Suga, but since it involves drunk driving on a scooter, the investigation into whether a violation of the Road Traffic Act applies will continue. If the investigation concludes that there was DUI on an electric scooter, it is highly unlikely that the case will close with a simple fine.

In South Korea, electric kickboards are only available to rent with a license and drivers are bound to many of the same traffic laws as other motor vehicles. According to a report by SE Daily, e-scooters’ fatality rate for traffic accidents is 5.6%, 4.3 times higher than the overall traffic accident fatality rate.
