While V is most well-known for his musical talents, he’s also a highly skilled visual artist. Surprisingly, his love for visual art influences his approach to writing songs.

V uses “white space” in his music to leave room for listeners to form their own mental images as they listen to his songs. In the art world, white space (also known as negative space) refers to the empty space around and between the subjects of a piece. Proper use of white space can enhance an image and make a piece look more balanced.

When he’s writing his solo songs, V avoids using “too many syllables.” By doing so, he applies the use of white space to his music and he gives listeners time to feel the full impact of his lyrics. He said, “I tried not to pack my personal songs with too many syllables. There were parts that I could express better and sounded more polished when there was some white space.”

V summed up his songwriting approach by saying, “I hoped ARMY would picture something for themselves when they listen to my music, even if there was nothing specific to look at.”  To make it easier for fans to picture something in their minds while listening to his songs, V includes sounds that listeners can easily associate with real-life objects. For example, in “Scenery,” he included the sounds of the wind, wind chimes, walking on snow, and a camera shutter.
