“Burning Sun” Revisited — Everyone Named In The Incriminatory Chat Room And Their Roles

With BBC’s recent documentary on the huge Burning Sun scandal, the spotlight has once more been turned to the case. With 10 celebrities named in the chatroom that was the core of the scandal, here is a recap on each named party and their role.

MBC published a list of names that were reportedly in the chatroom.

1. Seungri

The ringleader of the group, Seungri was the boss and the brains behind the operation. He planned the large events and catered to important clients, using this circle of friends to help.

2. Jung Joon Young

Known as Seungri’s right-hand man, he was the most deeply involved in the chatroom, other than Seungri. After police investigations, it was found that he had been guilty of spreading 11 different illegally-filmed videos of women.

3. Yong Jun Hyung

Although he strongly denied his involvement at first, he changed his statement after receipts from the chatroom were published. Yong Jun Hyung claims to have never personally filmed anything himself, but was a bystander in the chatroom.

4. Choi Jong Hoon

Choi Jong Hoon was not only reveled to have mocked the women in the videos, but also proposed bribery to the police to cover up the group’s crimes. He was also belatedly found to be guilty of a DUI. The police also found that he had spread obscene videos in the chatroom.

5. Roy Kim

One of the more complex cases, Roy Kim denied his involvement in the scandal. While he claimed not to have been a part of the incriminatory chatroom, he admitted to having sent an obscene photo to a group in 2016, including Jung Joon Young and Seungri. He claimed that he simply saw the photo online, and wanted to share the information that the photo had been photoshopped.

6. Lee Jong Hyun

Although he had not been found to have done any illegal filming himself, it was found that he was a bystander in the group, making comments that were sexually harassing, as well as treating women like objects.

7. Kang In

Kang In was named when the police identified him as a suspect. Kang In denied involvement in the case, claiming that he had only been a part of the chatroom before the crimes had been committed.

8. Jung Jin Woon

He faced a similar case to Kang In.

9. Lee Cheol Woo

He faced a similar case to Kang In and Jung Jin Woon.

10. Eddy Kim

He claimed to have not been involved in the scandal, although he admitted to spreading one obscene photograph he obtained through the internet.

Apart from the 9 celebrities, there were also 2 staff from the Burning Sun club in the chatroom. They helped facilitate Seungri’s plans involving the club.
