CUBE Entertainment Almost Stopped (G)I-DLE From Releasing One Of Their Most Famous Songs

“That time was so serious…”

(G)I-DLE‘s Soyeon recently sat down for an interview with MONSTA X‘s I.M on I.M On The Beat. Here, she talked about her career as the head producer of her group.

It was not always an easy ride, with her company, CUBE Entertainment, refusing to support her several times. This was especially true for the 2020 title track “DUMDi DUMDi.”

There were quite many times where we almost used someone else’s song. Even if I worked so hard on my songs, my company said ‘DUMDi DUMDi’ is not good. They wanted to get another song.

She explained that they were uncooperative to the point where she said there was a “rebellion” against this one song. She “fought so hard” in order to make it their title track.

There was a ‘DUMDi DUMDi’ rebellion. That time was so serious. I fought so hard.

Despite her efforts, the company continued to turn her down. She eventually decided to put her name on the line, saying she would take responsibility for any damages.

I kept fighting and everyone at my company said ‘DUMDi DUMDi’ can’t be used. So I said that I will take all responsibility since this song will definitely succeed.

The result was just as she expected—it was a success. “DUMDi DUMDi”  became one of their best selling songs at the time. The single album charted at number two on the Gaon Album Chart and the Gaon Retail Album Chart with 73,826 units sold.

Then among all the music scores at that time, it was the best. So the fighting ended there.

With Soyeon’s leadership at the helm, (G)I-DLE continued to release top song after top song. They most recently amazed fans with their track “Super Lady.”
