Disturbing Report Shows 6 Out Of 10 Deepfake Victims Are Minors
According to newly released data by the National Police Agency on Friday, August 30, nearly 60% of the victims in all the deepfake-related sexual crimes investigated by the Korean police turned out to be underage individuals.
According to the report, between 2021 and 2023, a total of 523 deepfake sex crimes reports were made to the police. Out of those, 315 victims (59.8%) were identified to be teenagers. This age demographic has the highest percentage among the victims, with the second highest being people in their 20s (31.2%). For people in their 30s, the percentage is 5.3%, and for those in their 40s, 1.1%.
The number of minors being targeted by deepfake sex crimes has seen an alarming surge in the last two years, going from 53 in 2021 to 181 in 2023, a 3.4-fold increase.
Shockingly, the number of perpetrators who are minors has also increased, and it is assumed that the growing ease of access to AI-powered deepfake technology has played a huge part in it. Among all the suspects who were charged with creating deepfake pornographic videos, a whopping 65.4% were found to be teenagers in 2021. In 202, that number has gone up to 75.8%. From January to July this year, 73.6% of the cases had minors as perpetrators.
South Korea’s problem with deepfake-powered digital crimes was laid bare in front of the entire world only recently when some netizens took the initiative and exposed many problematic Telegram channels with hundreds of thousands of members participating in such crimes. Later, a group of developers created a website to track down the educational institutions that were involved in deepfake crimes, and shockingly, multiple elementary schools were among the listed names.
