Girl Group Labeled “6th Generation” By Media Outlet Sparks Debate
Cosmosy is an upcoming girl group formed by the creative director of BLACKPINK, aespa, IVE, and more groups.
When the group was first announced, it was highly anticipated because the creative director has led the debut of many loved K-pop artists. However, it also sparked backlash.
BLACKPINK Creative Director’s New Girl Group Receives Backlash From Netizens
Ahead of the group’s debut on December 31, a Korean outlet put out an article titled, “‘6th-Generation Girl Group’ Cosmosy Makes Bold Debut Today (31st) with Their First Single ‘zigy=zigy’.”
While some acknowledged that because the group is Japanese, they are probably speaking in terms of J-Pop, others thought that if it was meant to be K-Pop, they didn’t understand how the “6th Generation” could have already started.
- “They mean J-pop. Does using K-pop talent automatically make it K-pop? Lol.”
- “Calling it the 6th generation, lol.”
- “Already knew this would happen when 5th generation ‘started.'”
- “For real. LOL.”
- “At this rate, a group debuting on Jan 1 could kick off the 7th generation.”
- “Huh? The 5th generation hasn’t even been properly defined yet, and they’re making stuff up. LOL.”
The topic of generations and categorizing groups has always been debated, and the article seemingly continues the debate on how the generations are classed.
