Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon Reveals She Is Currently Suffering From Depression
Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon has revealed through her Instagram Story that she is currently suffering from depression, and fired back at those who were looking down on people like herself, who are suffering from it.
Taeyeon opened up her “Ask Me Anything” on her Instagram, and posted her reply to a Korean who asked her “Is it (Do you have) bipolar disorder? tsk tsk”. Bipolar disorder was formerly known as manic depression, and is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings.
No, I am suffering from depression. Right now I am taking medicine and working hard to get better. Whether it is bipolar disorder or depression, don’t just “tsk tsk” people and look at them negatively. They are all patients who are sick and in pain.
— Taeyeon
Several of her other responses to questions also showed that she was not in the best condition while answering questions that were sent in.
Q: If you’re in your thirties, grow up a bit.
A: If you’re in your thirties or your forties, it’s all still the same.
Q: How do you overcome a slump?
A: I’m not good at overcoming a slump so I just live in one.
Q: Have you been doing well?
A: No.
Q: Do you only know how to say no??
A: Sorry
Q: Why are you being so disrespectful today?
A: Ah, I’m being disrespectful?
However, not all of her answers were in a negative tone, and she tried to cheer up others too.
Q: I’m also getting treatment for depression. Let’s overcome it together. I’ll always be cheering you on.
A: It will get better.
Q: Should I resign from my job?
A: No, you should work hard and keep living.
Finally, she thanked her fans for their support and the strength that they give her, and apologized to make them worry.
Thank you very much for listening to my songs and looking out for me. Because of you all, I get strength every single day.
— Taeyeon
Q: I’m sending you a virtual hug!
A: I started talking to everyone because I think I needed to get some strength. Thanks to everyone, I’m getting a good influence from you all. I’ll be fine. I’m sorry for making everyone worry and I think this is a process for us to get to know each other better. I’ll try to take even better care and try harder for our fans.
Fans have been sending their support and love for Taeyeon for being so upfront and open about her depression, and hope that others are able to also send their support to not only Taeyeon, but others with depression.
Even tho reading the answers on Taeyeon's IG stories kills me, I'm so proud of her way to advocate ppl w/ mental illness. Surviving daily is tiring enough for us, let alone thinking abt another ppl's life.
But she cares. & still bother to educate those f*ckers.
고맙다 태연아.

It takes courage to be this open and honest about your own struggles, especially as a well-known person in a country like Korea where mental illnesses are ignored and often swept under the rug,
Proud of you, Taeyeon. 💜

She has always been open to fans about issues like depression and inclusion. She even says she wants her concerts to be a place where fans can feel comfortable, loved, and included.
And honestly if you don't wanna fit in to those criteria, then just gtfo (:

Taeyeon opened up about her depression. As fans, please do not pressure her and demanding her to do this and that. Be patient. Let her take a break. Let her heal. She will come back stronger. I believe in her. We should believe in her. Please send her lots of love 💜
