“The Glory” Actress Cha Joo Young Defends Her Controversial NSFW Scene — Clarifies Her Previous Statements
Cha Joo Young defended her controversial nude scene in Netflix‘s K-Drama, The Glory.
Netflix recently released the long-awaited second season of its hit K-Drama, The Glory. The drama, telling the story of Moon Dong Eun (played by Song Hye Kyo) and her quest to exact revenge on her High School bullies, has captivated audiences in Korea and abroad.
Audiences, however, were surprised when in the second season, actress Cha Joo Young, who plays the role of Kim Hye Jeong in the drama, had a scene in which she is topless.
The scene instantly became a hot topic among netizens, with many of them expressing discomfort over the scene. Many, who watched the drama, stated that the scene was unnecessary and even exploitative.
On March 15, news outlet Newsen released an article with Cha Joo Young, in which she shared her thoughts on the scene.
In the interview, the actress was asked if she had any apprehensions about the scene after receiving the script. Cha Joo Young answered candidly, saying she didn’t, and defended the scene as being important for her character’s development.
I didn’t (have any apprehensions). I thought it was a scene that completely expressed Hye Jeong. All she had was her body, and she had never defeated her friends in anything, but at least for that moment, Hye Jeong had nothing to be envious about. We shot the scene thinking Hye Jeong was really cool. (The production team) also were very considerate.

The actress was then asked if she felt disappointed that the scene had taken up much of the spotlight, to which the actress answered frankly.
We did what was necessary in a necessary scene for a necessary role.

The actress also clarified her previous statements when she revealed that the director asked her to wear a white dress in a scene that has since gone viral.
When I previously sighed, it was directed toward myself. We had prepared several outfits for the scene. I ultimately wore the (white dress) because after trying it on, I understood (why the director wanted me to wear it). It was a perfect scene to show Hye Jeong. But, I was concerned if the audience members would understand the tight-fitting dress, and therefore I sighed. We prepared a dress that we thought Lee Sa Ra would actually wear. I agreed (to wear the dress) after I realized that rather than being factual, it was more important for the scene to express Hye Jeong’s character.
