HYBE Labels Gets A Little Praise For Their Action To Protect The Environment
There has been a lot of talk lately, and understandably so, about the impact that the K-Pop industry is having on the environment. With the excessive albums being purchased and then discarded in droves, the amount of waste being produced and trees destroyed by this behavior is astonishing. While some entertainment companies have promised to take measures to reduce the waste they produce, many K-Pop fans are doubtful that it’s really a priority for many of these labels.
SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo Man was notoriously known for his plans to combat the climate crisis, even at one time preparing to have aespa release a song about sustainability. Though his plan never came to fruition, he’s remained determined to go through with his “greenism” initiative, and it seems that this goal has finally made its way to other labels as well.
It was recently revealed that HYBE Labels, partnered with the Environmental Foundation, has planted over 300,000 mangrove trees since 2022. The trees were planted on a 60-hectare site in the Dacope region of Khulna District, Bangladesh, an area that has been hit especially hard by deforestation.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), about 62% of the world’s Sundarbans mangrove trees are located in Bangladesh, but these forests have been reduced by as much as 30% over the last half-century due to land development, agricultural expansion, and other destructive means.
The 300,000 trees that HYBE planted are estimated to absorb about 426,000 tons of carbon over the next two decades.
While this is likely only a small step in the K-Pop industry making a positive impact on the environment, hopefully other labels will follow suit and join the cause to reduce their detrimental behavior and help protect the planet.
