IU’s Accuser Absent From First Trial Of Plagiarism Lawsuit
The individual who had accused IU of plagiarism did not show up at the court during the first trial of the lawsuit filed by the singer against them.
Earlier in May, an individual identified as “A” had filed a complaint against IU to the Seoul Gangnam Police Station for violating the Copyright Law. The complaint mentioned six songs suspected of plagiarism, including “The Red Shoes,” “Good Day,” “BBIBBI,” “Pitiful,” “Boo,” and “Celebrity.” IU is credited with writing and composing “Celebrity” and producing and composing “BBIBBI” among these.
The complaint was dismissed in court as it pointed out songs that IU didn’t compose or write. After the plagiarism allegations surfaced in public, IU’s agency vowed strong legal action.
IU then filed a lawsuit against “A,” claiming damages from defamation, infringement of personal rights, and false accusations.
On July 24, the Seoul Central District Court’s Division 29 conducted the first trial of this lawsuit. On this day, IU’s representative was present in court instead of the singer herself. The defendant however failed to show up in court, and neither did they send a representative.
IU’s side mentioned that the “A” was in the US and that they were in the process of obtaining their identity information through a trial in the US. The legal proceedings are estimated to take another three to four months, and hence, IU’s side requested some more time to extend the lawsuit and present its case.
The court accepted this request and the new trial date will be decided after the defendant is identified.
