JTBC‘s Crime Chief revealed gruesome CCTV footage of a Korean man beating up a Korean woman—whom he had seen for the first time on the streets and followed—inside her apartment building elevator.
According to the segment, the incident occurred on August 19, 2024 (KST) mid-afternoon around 2:30 PM. The man, in his 20s, followed the woman into her apartment building, got on the elevator with her, pressed “4th Floor,” and then pulled out a baseball bat with which he began attacking her.
As the elevator moved up the floors, the woman put up a fierce fight to save her life. When the elevator finally came to a stop and the doors opened, the woman tried to get off, screaming for help.
The man held on to the woman’s arms, attempting to keep her on the elevator—but was eventually dragged off the elevator, too. He showed no regret when his plan didn’t work and actually “stood around” as the woman called the police. He was heard mumbling about how “strong” the woman was before getting arrested by the police officers dispatched to the scene.
It’s not like there’s something I can do in that small elevator space. So, I thought I could die if I didn’t fight back. I tried so hard to stop him. You know, in life-or-death situations like that, we all become much stronger. So I was focusing on the elevator doors opening. When I kept grabbing onto the baseball bat and fighting back, he must have realized that his plan would not work. He exited the elevator with me and murmured, ‘You’re so f*cking strong.’ He also said that he didn’t care if I reported him to the police and he got arrested…

The police have since revealed that the man “chose” the woman who was walking home from the supermarket for an inexplicable reason. He was said to have been wandering around a subway station on his bike, but when he set her as the target, he abandoned it on a footbridge to go after her.
The man then confessed to the police that he launched the attack on the woman because he was “unhappy with his life.” He has been arrested on the charge of attempted murder.
Koreans are growing more terrified of the rising number of these attacks on complete strangers. Just a month earlier, another Korean man in his 30s was arrested for killing his neighbor with a Japanese Samurai sword.
