Released on October 3, 30 Days has been an undeniable hit, leading the box office charts for a straight seven days. During the three-day holiday weekend alone, the film drew an impressive audience with about 438,000 ticket sales. As of Monday, the rom-com has grossed an astounding ₩7.65 billion KRW (about $5.71 million USD), with ticket sales soaring over 774,000. Meanwhile, the heavily marketed Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman had to settle for the second spot with a still-respectable 160,000 ticket sales over the weekend.

Directed by the talented Nam Dae Joong, known for his 2019 romantic comedy Homme Fatale, 30 Days offers a fresh take on the classic love-hate relationship trope. The story orbits around Jung Yeol (Kang Ha Neul) and Na Ra (Jung So Min), a couple deeply in love who eventually fall out due to contrasting personalities. Just as they are about to finalize their divorce after a month-long wait, fate plays its part. A fateful car accident results in both of them waking up in a hospital with amnesia, forgetting their turbulent past and even each other.

While the premise of couples rediscovering love isn’t new, 30 Days brings a unique flavor by meshing the pain of separation with the comedy of memory loss. The amnesia angle not only adds layers of humor but also builds tension as the audience is left guessing whether the couple will rekindle their love or go their separate ways. Both Kang and Jung have been lauded for their performances, drawing audiences into the roller-coaster emotions of their characters.

The success of 30 Days is a testament to the allure of romantic comedies. While blockbusters with massive budgets and expansive marketing campaigns can bring in huge numbers, it’s heartwarming stories like 30 Days that truly resonate with audiences, making them laugh and cry in equal measure.

As the movie continues its upward trajectory, it’s clear that sometimes, love, humor, and a touch of amnesia can be the perfect formula for box office success.
