Amid the series of shocking revelations from actress Kim Sae Ron‘s family that have since stunted Kim Soo Hyun‘s celebrity career altogether, a restaurant brand’s desperate attempt to cut ties with the troubled actor has gained attention online.
Shabu All Day, a Japanese hotpot restaurant with franchise locations around Korea, was one of the first brands to remove traces of Kim Soo Hyun as soon as his inappropriate relationship with the late actress was exposed.

Following the latest developments, it seems the brand has taken extra measures to ensure its affiliation with the actor goes unnoticed. One online post from a Shabu All Day customer showed one Shabu All Day location setting the tables with its paper placemats turned upside down.

I came to eat at Shabu All Day and they set the table like this with the placemats upside down. I flipped it, wondering what this was about…

The curious customer flipped the placemat to find out the reason:

When the post went viral, Korean consumers praised the brand for doing what it could—meeting the demands of the customers who were uncomfortable with the model endorsement while saving the planet by not throwing away the otherwise perfect placemats.

- “It’s not the placemat’s fault… Hate the person, not the paper.”
- “We have to let this slide… The franchise owner and the employees tried their best.”
- “Yeah, the placemats should just be used. It’d be a waste otherwise.”
- “Haha.”
- “Oh, no…”
- “Looks like that was the best anyone could have done.”
- “I walked past one of the locations a couple of weeks ago and thought, ‘Wow, his face is all over this place.’ I wonder what happened to that location.”
- “LOL.”
- “At least they put in some effort for their customers. TBH, his faces makes me nauseous.”
- “What could they have done? The placemats should just be used.”
In addition to Shabu All Day, major brands like Prada, Homeplus, and Tous Les Jours have all distanced themselves from Kim Soo Hyun.
