Film “Bombs” At The Box Office Despite Star Cast — Actress’s Reaction Gains Attention
One of the largest ways a film’s success is determined is through its performance. For films released through the traditional route of movie theaters, box office performance is one of the first ways for a film to gross a profit.
Unfortunately, films do not always perform well, with some failing to break even on production costs.
Recently, a Korean film’s poor box office performance became a topic of discussion — as well as how one of its stars reacted.
On August 14, Victory hit theaters. Victory tells the story of a dance duo at a high school on a remote island who form a cheerleading squad.
Girl’s Day‘s Hyeri plays Pil Sun, the film’s main character, while actresses Park Se Wan and Jo A Ram (former gugudan‘s Hyeyeon) appear as the lead’s best friend and a trained cheerleader, respectively. Lee Jung Ha also stars in the film as a soccer player on the school’s team.
Initial reports for the film’s performance showed it in 5th place at the box office, attracting 36,258 viewers on its first day. In the week since its release, Victory has not seen a significant increase in viewership; it is estimated that around 220,000 people have viewed it.
Victory‘s breakeven point is estimated to be at about 2 million viewers, meaning it has a long way to go.
Hyeri has expressed disappointment in the film’s performance, having felt moved by the content from the start and admitting to crying while watching it and at the premiere event.
However, the actress has taken steps to try to increase viewership, and get more seats filled at the theaters.
In addition to speaking about the movie on shows, Hyeri has increased her interactions online, reposting movie reviews on her Instagram from fans.
Hyeri, nicknamed the film’s promotion fairy, also made surprise appearances at film showings, interacting with the audiences directly.
