In a matter of days, Luigi Mangione has gone from a regular American citizen to a global working-class hero figure, and South Korea is no exception.
For those uninitiated to the story of Mangione, he stands accused of gunning down Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The insurance company is notorious for denying claims to its customers, and Mangione’s alleged assassination of its CEO seems to have led to an unprecedented level of catharsis among the American public.
While the state is trying to charge him with terrorism, the general public, including Mangione’s prisonmates, has banded together in support, emphasizing the call to “Free Luigi.”

The news has made its way to South Korea and, from the looks of it, has quickly garnered huge sympathy and support for Mangione. A viral post on Theqoo that reported his alleged crime and the background of UnitedHealthcare has garnered over 40,000 views and 400 comments in a matter of a few hours. While some comments were baffled at the sheer volume of UnitedHealthcare victims, others hailed him as a living hero.
- “F*ck. If the number of victims is 31 million, then this should be considered a natural death. Good riddance.”
- “31 million people…He’s a righteous man.”
- “No matter how much I think about it, the McDonald’s employee who reported him is just ridiculous…Everyone pretended not to know anything and intentionally wore Luigi’s clothes to hinder the investigation. But they reported him just because they wanted to get the money.”
- “It looks like a Netflix still cut.”
- “Free Luigi.”
- “He’s a warrior. A living hero.”
