On August 20, 2024 (KST), the Busan District Court of South Korea found Kwon guilty of attempted murder for assaulting the victim. Kwon claimed that he committed the crime under the influence of alcohol. He then proceeded to miss three court hearings due to claims of panic disorder.

Earlier in February, at around 5:20 AM, Kwon dragged a woman in her 20s—whom he had just met—into a secluded alley and threatened her with a weapon, attempting to steal her belongings. When the victim resisted, Kwon assaulted her for seven minutes, delivering about 30 blows to her face with his fists and feet. Kwon continued to severely assault the unconscious victim, delivering what is referred to as “soccer kicks” to her head. When people discovered the scene of the attack, Kwon fled with her mobile phone and other items.

Kwon claimed that he had no intention of killing the victim, but the court ruled that, given Kwon’s background as a soccer player, he should have known the potential of killing the victim when kicking them repeatedly. The court explained, “While Kwon’s actions are said to have been influenced by depression and other factors,” the brutality of the assault was unacceptable.

The prosecution demanded a life sentence, but the court reduced it to 25 years, given it was attempted murder and not actual murder.

The victim, who was assaulted by Kwon in February, was able to save her life thanks to another person reporting the attack to the police and getting her taken to the hospital. She is reported to have sustained severe injuries, including a fractured jaw.

Following the news of Kwon’s sentence, Koreans—expressing rage at the unending attack on women—demand Kwon’s full name and face to be revealed.

  • “Just off him.”
  • “Getting drunk and killing people is starting to look like the norm, haha.”
