In February, a 48-year-old elementary school teacher confessed to stabbing an 8-year-old student to death at a private academy in Daejeon. During her interrogation, she revealed that she had chosen her victim at random. “It didn’t matter who,” she told police.

Her chilling confession, along with the brutal crime, shocked the nation and made international headlines. According to a report by Yonhap News, prosecutors indicted 48-year-old Myeong Jae Wan on several charges, including kidnapping and trading for gain, on March 27. This comes after Myeong spent over 20 days in the hospital for a self-inflicted injury that occurred at the crime scene.

Three days after returning to work from medical leave for depression, Myeong purchased a weapon before entering the school. She waited until the school’s aftercare program ended at around 4:30 PM, and then used a book to lure a random student–8-year-old Kim Ha Neul–into an empty classroom. There, Myeong strangled and stabbed Kim before injuring herself.

Along with her indictment, Myeong’s mugshots have been made public. They were released by the Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency on March 12.
