Netizens Accuse HYBE Of Plagiarism For LE SSERAFIM’s Track “Smart” — Artist Tyla Responds
LE SSERAFIM‘s recent song has been accused of plagiarizing a song by the artist Tyla, and she seemingly saw the discourse online.
Along with their title track “EASY,” LE SSERAFIM shared a performance of the track “Smart.”
While many loved the song, others thought it seemed to resemble Tyla’s hit song “Water.”

After fans shared the resemblance, many called out HYBE for alleged plagiarism.

the LSF thing is so… watching everyone gaslight tyla and those who hear what they hear is insane.
the chords of the song is People by Libianca to a T. exact key.
the amapiano element, styling and choreo is Water by Tyla
and there are Calm Down Elements— 𐚁 (@fcknlisa) February 20, 2024
so hybe is taking sounds from western and south african artists again without permission or credit, specifically artists like tinashe, pinkpantheress, and tyla? pic.twitter.com/z1BukJKSXz

Other fans shared that while there were Afrobeat influences, it seemed like a stretch to say that LE SSERAFIM were directly and specifically copying “Water.”
I just understand gatekeeping Afrobeats
This Korean group copy Afrobeats song…but na tyla-water dem dey talk she copy when both songs no even sound alike lmao
Dey are acting as if she invented Afrobeats or some shit when she herself copy 😭

I just listened to that song again and it doesn’t sound anything like Tyla, please her fans should sit this one out.
Tyla didn’t invent that sound, she too it’s copy she copied.
A lot of artists use the sound but just differently, so please sit this one out.

how is le sserafim shaking ass or having an afrobeat song equal to them copying tyla?? the entire afrobeat genre has multiple artists it isn’t just only her, so what did le sserafim specifically do to copy something that is exclusive to tyla? the songs don’t even sound the same😭 https://t.co/tpHumEcSBT

After the discourse became a huge issue online, Tyla tweeted a GIF of someone looking confused.
— Tyla (@Tyllaaaaaaa) February 20, 2024
While there was no mention of the issue, considering the timing, it wasn’t surprising that netizens thought it was in direct reference to the “plagiarism claims.” Yet, after the tweet, Tyla seemingly saw all the comments thinking she was referring to the issues with LE SSERAFIM, but she just shared, “No weird vibes, always love to all girls.”
Why is my phone blowing up 💀
No weird vibes, always love to all girls

After the response, netizens unsurprisingly thought that Tyla was indirectly referencing LE SSERAFIM as it came after her first tweet was bombarded with comments about the song. Many also hated how Tyla was dragged into the conversation and had to be bombarded by tweets and comments from netizens about her song.

The song “Smart” has definitely split fans on both the issues of plagiarism and whether the choreography is appropriate for underage member Eunchae. You can read more below.
