Actor Lee Joon In Talks To Make A Much-Anticipated Return To Acting In Upcoming Netflix Show
On June 15, actor Lee Joon‘s company Prain TPC confirmed that he is currently in talks for a leading role in the upcoming Netflix drama The Sea of Silence and that the actor considering the opportunity “thoughtfully and positively.”
The Sea of Silence is billed as an eight-part sci-fi thriller set in an indeterminate time in the future where the planet has become one giant desert, causing food and water to become scarce. In an attempt to combat the increase in the difficulty of surviving and the possible end of humanity, a special team is tasked to retrieve mysterious samples from an abandoned research facility on the moon and quite literally travel through the final frontier.
Debuting in 2009 as the main dancer and face of the five-member group MBLAQ, Lee Joon quickly became known for his intense stage performances, his hilarious and goofy side off stage, and his all-around charismatic personality. He gained further popularity after displaying strong acting skills in smaller roles in various shows and films but maintained his position in MBLAQ first. However, he eventually left the group in 2014 to pursue acting and other ventures full-time. He enlisted in the military in 2017 and was discharged in late 2019, and has since then hosted the radio show Lee Joon’s Youngstreet on SBS Power FM.
A role in The Sea of Silence would mark Lee Joon’s first acting role since the KBS2 2017 drama My Father is Strange. Before that drama, he had also held leading or supportive roles in movies such as Rough Play (2013) and TV shows such as Gap-dong (2014) and Heard It Through the Grapevine (2015).
While Lee Joon’s possible role in the show hasn’t been confirmed, several others have. These include the participation of actor Gong Yoo, known for his award-winning roles in works, including Coffee Prince (2007), Train to Busan (2016), and Goblin (2016-2017). Actress Bae Doo Na is also scheduled as part of the cast and is known roles such as those in The Host (2006), Sense8 (2015-2018), and Kingdom (2019-present).
The Sea of Silence is based on the short film of the same title. The film’s director, Choi Hang Yong, will also be reprising that same role for the TV show version. The show will be written by Park Eun Kyo, who won the award for Best Screenwriter at the 2010 Asian Film Awards and Best Screenplay at the 2009 Critics’ Choice Awards, both for the 2009 thriller Mother. Actor and model Jung Woo Sung, known for his roles in works like Asphalt Man, Asura: The City of Madness, and Innocent Witnesses, is listed as the show’s executive producer.
With filming for the show scheduled to begin in August, a decision on his role is anticipated to be released soon. However, given the current status of the coronavirus outbreak, the filming date could be pushed back. Neither the show’s production executives nor Netflix have released any new information on the show’s production or its broadcasting. Regardless of the status of either, fans are still hoping for another chance to see Lee Joon back on screen once more.
