When Yves told a crowd of fans about her favorite Animal Crossing villager, one fan made an unexpected remark.

Fan: “Him?”

Yves: “Yeah!”

Fan: “He’s so ugly. Look at him, y’all. *Laughs*”

Other fans: “He is so nice. He’s cute.”

Yves: “I was so surprised.”

When the video surfaced online, many found the comment inappropriate. Particularly, Yves’ uncomfortable reaction showed that the joke didn’t quite translate.

Some found the behavior to be like that of a bully who makes fun of things others enjoy.

The situation opened up a discourse on fans’ parasocial friendships with idols: Many believe it is inappropriate to be speaking to idols in a sarcastic manner like they may do with their friends. Additionally, language barriers and cultural differences can also get in the way of these types of jokes.

Fans showed support for Yves by making fanart of her favorite character.
