K-Drama “Lovely Runner” Shocks Fans With Plot Twist, Leaving Them Devastated

TvN‘s Lovely Runner (also known as Run Away With Sun-Jae On Piggyback), starring Byeon Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon, is currently the hottest K-Drama since Queen of Tears. This romantic-comedy time-slip show is adapted from the webcomic Tomorrow’s Best.

Ryu Seon-Jae (Byeon Woo-Seok) is a top star who has been in the spotlight since his debut. His life seems perfect, but being in the entertainment industry has completely worn him out. Meanwhile, Lim Sol (Kim Hye-Yoon) loves Ryu Seon-Jae as an adoring fan. When she was little, she had an accident. Due to that, she gave up on her dream, but listening to Ryu Seon-Jae’s song on the radio gave her comfort and she became his fan since then. One day, Lim Sol hears breaking news that Ryu Seon-Jae has ended his own life. She feels deep sadness over the tragic news. Miraculously, Lim Sol somehow travels back in time to 15 years in the past. There, she faces Ryu Seon-Jae, who is a 19 year old high school student. She struggles to prevent his tragic future.

Unfortunately, Lovely Runner is concluding next week with its final two episodes. Yet, Episodes 13 and 14 have sent viewers into a panic.

At the end of Episode 13, Ryu Sun Jae (also romanized as Ryu Seon Jae) gets stabbed by Kim Young Soo (Heo Hyeong Gyu) and falls into the water from a cliff. Im Sol, who has been attempting to stop his death from the beginning, panics and sends them to the past through his watch, which acts as a time machine throughout the show.

This choice undid everything we had seen before. She even changed their meet-cute, which had occurred even before the first time slip. Sun Jae and Sol, who were neighbors, met each other when he accidentally received her package and went in the rain to return it. This time, she goes the other way when she sees him instead of going up and receiving it from him.

Sun Jae and Sol are now back in the present day. While she has her memories of everything, it appears everything has changed. They are technically strangers, as he doesn’t know her.

Lovely Runner fans are heartbroken to realize that nothing of the series we have watched thus far “happened.” Sun Jae appears to have no memories of him and Sol, and there’s no ECLIPSE, although he is still friends with Baek In Hyuk (N.Flying‘s Seunghyub).

 

Naturally, viewers are going through many emotions, expressing their anger at tvN for “erasing” all the fond memories.

Some have joked that Sun Jae needs to watch the previous twelve episodes to remember everything…

In a way, Sun Jae does this in Episode 14. He read a script that Sol wrote inspired by their story. Although he has no memories of anything, it moved him to tears.

Sun Jae also has begun to experience memory flashes, giving him a glimpse at his previous life.

It appears Sun Jae will get his memories back. Yet, no happy ending is guaranteed. It looks like he will only continue to experience traumatic events, as a car accident was teased in the preview for Episode 15.

Lovely Runner fans are sad the show is ending soon, but they are also incredibly anxious about how it might end. Hopefully, our Sun Jae and Sol will finally have a happy ending and a long life together!
