Male K-Pop Idol Writes A Song Begging Sasaengs To Stop Stalking Him
JYJ‘s Jaejoong was the first guest on the talk show hosted by TWICE‘s Jeongyeon. Here, he presented items that he would like to “donate” to her, including his fourth full-length album FLOWER GARDEN (2024).
Celebrating the 20th anniversary! It’s also an album dedicated to the fans who have always supported and loved me for over 20 years. They’re all songs that I love.
— Jaejoong
One of the songs he reflected on was the 10th track “Don’t.” He revealed that he wrote it as a direct plea to the sasaeng (obsessive) fans who used to stalk him particularly when he was at the height of his career in the early 2000s.
‘Don’t’ is really ‘Don’t.’ Jeongyeon, have you ever had a stalker fan following you to your private life?
— Jaejoong
He was open about the fact that he “suffered” because of their actions.
It was the song that gave me a really hard time. I suffered! They kept calling me and they followed me.
— Jaejoong
Like the lyrics suggest, the sasaeng fans would often call his private number, track his every move, and more. They would even sell his phone number to other fans who wanted to be close to him as well.
Don’t call me
Even if I change my number, you still call
Please don’t call me
Don’t call me every night
I’m suffocating, stop selling my number for money— The Lyrics of “Don’t”
He was never allowed to fully rest or relax due to the constant threat of their presence.
I shouldn’t have answered the call
I cried when I heard your voice
You can’t see me when I’m busy with my schedule
But as soon as I’m home, you call, yeah, yeah, yeah
Can I just rest comfortably?
I’m finally resting
Yet you still call in the middle of the night— The Lyrics of “Don’t”
Because Jaejoong’s image was to be as mysterious as possible, fans were even more desperate to find out more about him.
My concept was mysticism. They were so curious about me. So out of all the things that I suffered, the biggest one is that they kept calling me and they followed me. The first verse is, a phone call. The second verse is about following. ‘Stop following me.’
— Jaejoong
The idol is known for being a frequent victim of harassment by his own fans.
