MAMAMOO’s Hwasa Receives Criticism Over Her “Butt Dance”
MAMAMOO member Hwasa is soon making her much-awaited solo comeback with the single “NA,” but netizens are less than impressed with the choreography.
The song itself, which has been teased through multiple teaser snippets, has received a lukewarm reaction from the public as many felt it was reminiscent of PSY’s hit songs rather than being Hwasa’s style.
Hwasa also recently posted multiple videos of her doing the “NA” dance challenge with her dancers and with Street Woman Fighter 2 fame Kirsten Dodgen, drawing much attention. The “killing part” of the dance seems to be the part where everyone grabs their butts and pushes them up while bouncing up and down on their feet.

A viral post on Theqoo pointed out this specific move, where the OP (original post) called it “the butt dance.” The post has garnered 85,000 views and 675 comments at the time of writing. Netizens either found the dance not interesting enough or flat-out called it “strange.”
- “Is this the best [she could do]….”
- “It feels like an anachronistic dance move.”
- “The dance moves are weird, and her expressions are really off too 🤦 Every time I watch Hwasa dance, her unique expressions make it hard to focus on the choreography.”
- “If she keeps doing this despite the criticism, it must just be Hwasa’s style… Why blame PSY’s company when it’s just how Hwasa is?
- “Did she really have to do it like that?”
- “What kind of a dance is that…? And the one where she danced with Kirsten, the camera went crazy.”
- “The part where they sweep their bellies looks fine for Kirsten since she only goes down to her waist. But Hwasa goes too low, which looks weird. She is also supposed to touch her butt at the bottom, but she grips it tightly, which makes it look weird. Maybe that’s the kind of image she wants?”
- “Uh…”
- “What is this, LOL? This is too strange.”
There were, however, many who felt that the dance was not anything out of the ordinary to warrant such criticism. Some also pointed out that the choreography itself looked fine in Kirsten’s execution more than Hwasa’s.
- “I was like ‘;;;;’ watching Hwasa dance, but Kirsten’s version is pretty good! Maybe it’s because she’s just touching the side of her hips? Hmm.”
- “The vibe is totally different from the person in the black outfit.
- “This is better than twerking.”
- “The choreography looks okay, though. It has a nice sense of rhythm rather than just being about the sexy vibe.”
- “The choreography looks fine?”
