“Minari” Snubbed By Major Golden Globe Category, Here’s Why It Never Had A Chance
While Lee Isaac Chung‘s Minari made history as the second Korean film after Bong Jun Ho‘s Parasite to ever be nominated and win Golden Globe‘s “Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language,” it’s been noticeably snubbed from two major categories.
Minari was excluded from one of the Golden Globe’s biggest categories: “Best Picture.” There’s a particular reason why it and Parasite both failed to break into the category’s nominations.
Esquire noted that Golden Globes’ rules limit films nominated in the foreign-language category to “qualify for awards in all other motion picture categories except Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.” The reason comes down to language.
Minari was never given a fighting chance because the categories “are exclusively for English language motion pictures.”
The fact that Minari follows a family forging their own path in America but being excluded from America’s best film category simply because it’s in Korean is unfortunate.
Even so, the language hasn’t stopped the film’s touching story from being recognized by other organizations and viewers all over the world.
