Mnet invests a hefty amount of money into the biggest girl group trainee survival show ever
After announcing that they would be creating a girl group survival show using trainees from different agencies, Mnet revealed that they have invested about four billion won into the project.
Survival shows have resulted in many successful groups, including popular groups such as WINNER, iKON, and MONSTA X. And most recently, JYP Entertainment‘s SIXTEEN has resulted in rookie girl group TWICE, one of the hottest rookie groups right now. With these groups certainly in mind, Mnet has revealed that they have invested four billion won, or approximately $3,415,480 USD, in production expenses for their upcoming survival show, Produce 101.
Featuring trainees from agencies including Cube Entertainment and Starship Entertainment, the show will have the trainees compete against each other until the final ten girls are chosen. The top ten girls will then be signed under Mnet to promote for a certain period of time as an EDM girl group. SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment has announced that they will not be participating in the program.
Although some are excited for the show, many netizens have expressed their disapproval with the amount of money Mnet is spending on the project with many believing that the company is wasting their money.
