The Unexpected Origins Of NCT U’s Viral “Baggy Jeans” TikTok Trend—Taeyong Didn’t Originate It

Taeyong actually asked someone else if he could copy them!

The latest K-Pop TikTok trend is NCT U‘s “Baggy Jeans,” but it’s not necessarily a dance challenge!

NCT U

After NCT U made their comeback, We Dem Boyz‘s Lee Dae Han posted an Instagram Reel in which an iconic sad scene from K-Drama Twenty Five Twenty One was lip-synced saying Nam Joo Hyuk‘s character’s name, Baek Yi Jin, before going into NCT U’s “Baggy Jeans” chorus. Members of We Dem Boyz actually choreographed “Baggy Jeans.”

The joke is made because Baek Yi Jin and “Baggy Jeans” sound very similar. They even look similar in Hangul!

Their video went viral with 2.9M views at the time of writing. NCT’s Taeyong also thought We Dem Boyz’s video was so funny that he reposted it on his Instagram Stories…

…and commented on the original video, asking permission to copy it. After Taeyong was granted permission, he went to work!

Taeyong: Can I copy this…? Heh

Lee Dae Han: Of course, LOLOLOL 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Taeyong then posted his own version, which has gone viral with 5.4M views on Instagram and 3.6M views on TikTok at the time of writing.

His fellow NCT members posted several, too, each making theirs unique.

This trend quickly caught on, and other K-Pop idols, such as Jeon Somi and ZEROBASEONE, have now participated in the challenge.
