Korean Netflix Series Under Fire For Using “Sea of Japan” In Subtitles
Netflix’s original series, The 8 Show, caused a stir online due to an error in the subtitles.
A Netflix representative released a statement to media outlets regarding the issue.
We confirmed that the East Sea was written as ‘Sea of Japan’ in some subtitles. We are currently in the process of correcting the subtitles. We were not thorough while providing subtitles in various languages. We ask for your continued support and feedback.

This mistake garnered much attention as the incorrect subtitles appeared during the scene of actor Ryu Jun Yeol singing the Korean national anthem.
Regarding this, Seo Kyung Deok, a professor at Sungshin Woman’s University sent an email regarding the mistake.
I found out about this after netizens reported it to me. I immediately sent a protest email as Netflix is a platform with a global influence.
The sea between Korea and Japan has been called the ‘East Sea’ since 2,000 years ago. I urge you to make the correction ASAP so that international viewers will not misunderstand.

Professor Seo is currently working on the global campaign to change the name of “Sea of Japan” to “East Sea.”
