Song Kang makes a cameo in the new Korean film Escape, which follows the struggles of a North Korean soldier (Lee Je Hoon) who is chased by a ruthless major (Koo Kyo Hwan) after he defects.

A clip shared last month showed a snippet of the actor’s role as Sun Woo Min and his interactions with Ri Hyun Sang (Koo Kyo Hwan).

When the clip was first posted, it gained attention among fans. On Instiz, a post shared the screenshot with a caption trying to analyze the relationship between Woo Kyo Hwan and Song Kang’s character.

The storyline involving Song Kang features a queer narrative. There is speculation about whether, due to his status as a North Korean soldier, he either repressed his feelings or loved secretly.

On X, an OP also shared their thoughts, adding, “Wow, this relationship sounds extremely interesting and seems like it will be very entertaining. What is the relationship between Song Kang and Koo Kyo Hwan’s characters?

It led many netizens to speculate that Song Kang’s character could be LGBT and try to showcase more complicated emotions Koo Kyo Hwan’s character is feeling.

In particular, on June 18, a new interview with the director Lee Jong Pil also added to the assumptions about Song Kang’s character, even adding that it was a character who was traditionally meant to be played by a female.

Song Kang’s character in the drama is named Sun Woo Min. In making Hyun Sang’s character more three-dimensional, as expressed by actor Koo Kyo Hwan, Sun Woo Min is like a Tinkerbell who can reveal the character’s past, inner desires, and heart. Initially, I also thought traditionally it should be a female character.

After seeing the interview, many took it as confirmation that Song Kang’s character could be seen as LGBTQ+ because it is meant to showcase Kyo Hwan’s “desires” and “heart,” which could relate to his feelings in a relationship. Also, the fact that it was meant to be played by a woman traditionally shows that it focuses more on love in a romantic relationship.

While the director hasn’t confirmed the LGBTQ+ nature of Song Kang’s role, many fans both in Korea and internationally believe that all signs point to the assumption being correct.
