North Korean Military Officer Flees After Stealing $30M From Kim Jung Un’s Slush Fund
It has been reported that the manager dispatched to China for the North Korean military’s “weapon modernization” has fled after stealing ₩41.5 billion KRW (about $30.0 million USD) last month.
It has been revealed that this was 30% of the slush fund organized by Kim Jung Un’s labor party secretary general. They believe there is a possibility that the manager may have fled to Korea as the United States and Europe do not admit illegal funds.
According to North Korean sources, the manager who fled was in charge of importing CNC (computer numerical control) from China to modernize weapons. It was also known that they were a key executive in Kim Jung Un’s regime as he was in charge of managing large slush funds.
However, reports have not confirmed whether the money was stolen in cash or deposited into an account. It is also possible that they had an escape partner in China.
The manager belongs to the North Korea Military Security Bureau, one of North Korea’s three major inspection agencies. A person who flees from one of these institutions may likely suffer from death threats. There is a possibility that they have escaped to Korea or another country to secure personal safety.
The director of Korea University’s Institute for Unification and Convergence gave their thoughts about the situation.
It looks like he has fled because there is a possibility of being summoned from Pyongyang due to embezzlement. They may also receive death threats from the North if they enter South Korea with a large amount of money. They might have to flee to the U.S. or another country to ensure safety.
