Before the 2024 Paris Olympics, The Philippines had only one gold medalist, Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, who won during the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.  Yulo became the second person ever and the first male to win a gold medal after his win during the floor event.

He became the first to ever win two gold medals after coming in first on the vault.

In the aftermath of his legendary wins, an allegedly unresolved conflict involving his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo, resurfaced.

Following his win, his mother was interviewed and allegedly spoke badly about Yulo’s girlfriend. Alleged posts made by his mother that were said to be “slighting” him also circulated online, including one where she congratulated an opponent.

Carlos Yulo and his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose, have since addressed the allegations online and revealed others involving his estrangement from his mother.

During a TikTok video, Yulo said that his mother judges his girlfriend based on how she dresses and acts due to her being from Australia.

Because ever since the beginning, she never liked Chloe even though she hadn’t seen or met her in person. Our relationship became more strained when I set boundaries in my relationship. I defended Chloe because I care about her.

He also addressed financial issues that had been brought up. In addition to negating that San Jose was spending all of his money, Yulo claimed that his mother did not inform him of a deposit made from a competition in 2022.

Yulo claimed that his mother took out part of the funds without telling him and then attempted to lie about how much the prize actually was. He also alleged that she had made unauthorized withdrawals.

His mother has since refutted these claims, stating that she moved money into her account for safekeeping, and has hired a law firm to protect her and her family against false claims made online.

Hopefully, now that Yulo himself has addressed these claims and stated that he has forgiven his mother, the focus can be placed back on his historic achievements.
