Comedian Park Myung Soo Believes Foreigners Should Learn Korean If They Visit The Country
Comedian Park Myung Soo shared his honest opinion about foreigners visiting South Korea on his radio show.
On the January 27th episode of KBS Cool FM‘s Park Myung Soo’s Radio Show, entertainer Eva was a featured guest. During her time on the show, one of the radio listeners shared their concerns with Eva and Park Myung Soo. Their specific concern sparked an interesting discussion regarding foreigners.
An international couple that I know will be coming to Korea soon, but I don’t speak English so I’m not sure how we are going to communicate. Please help me with some easy English greetings and phrases.
— Park Myung Soo’s Radio Show listener
It was to this concern that Park Myung Soo voiced his very honest opinion on the situation.
I don’t understand. Our country’s language is not English. If you’re going to visit our country, I think that that person should learn Korean. Why are we expected to communicate in English for them.
— Park Myung Soo
He didn’t stop there, but continued on with his opinion by elaborating further.
For example, if Eva came to our country, she should speak our country’s language. It would be weird if we all started speaking Russian, don’t you think?
— Park Myung Soo
It wasn’t just the comedian who felt this way. After he concluded his thoughts, many radio listeners agreed with his statements by clicking the “agree” button that is available during the radio show. Being the entertainer that she is, Eva lightened the mood by sharing a personal story with language deficiency in regards to her Korean father-in-law, ensuing laughter at the studio.
My father-in-law is good at English, but I’m actually pretty bad at English. When I first met him, I would speak to him in Korean and he would respond to me in English.
— Eva
