Popular 3rd Gen Idol Only Sells 22 Albums In A Day — But There’s More To The Story

Physical album sales are highly regarded in K-Pop.

While streaming is one way of measuring an album’s success, many people still use physical albums to gauge the strength of an artist’s fandom. High album sales are a source of pride, while lower sales can sometimes point to trouble ahead for groups under lesser-known labels.

Recently, a third-generation idol’s sales were lower than expected, but with a story behind them.

In 2014, GOT7 debuted under JYP Entertainment. The group has seen great success over the years, becoming the first K-Pop group to rank on Billboard’s Artist 100, among other achievements.

The group also made history after departing from JYPE, setting a new precedent for groups planning to leave their companies.

Since their last group activities, the members have focused on their solo careers as some serve out their military enlistments.

Youngjae has been very active in multiple ways, including as a radio show host and actor, in addition to his solo music.

On July 9, Youngjae made his comeback with “T.P.O,” following his departure from Sublime Artist Agency.

On an account that reports album sales, some fans were surprised to see that “T.P.O” had only registered 22 albums on its first recorded day of sales, well below the number his previous albums recorded.

However, there are several things to note about this release.

For one, this total was shared on June 8, the day before the album’s “official” release, meaning the totals were seemingly reported early and just hours after the preorders ended.

This can be seen in the total sales reported the next day, 4,161, a huge jump from the previous day. As of writing, on the 6th day of sales, Youngjae has sold 5,780 copies, an amount not far from the first week sales of his studio album Do It.

Additionally, Youngjae has charted on Genie and the I-Chart multiple times since release.

It seems like in some cases, album sale totals are not always what they seem to be!
