Popular Singer Under Fire For “Sexist” Joke, Threatens Legal Action Against Malicious Comments
Jo Hyunah from the R&B group Urban Zakapa is facing backlash from netizens for her misogynistic comments on the latest episode of the dating show I Am SOLO: Love Goes On.
During the episode, one male participant commented that after women turn 30, they no longer have the upper hand in the dating world. A female participant immediately responded, vehemently disagreeing. She added that preferences differ from person to person, and a person’s capabilities decide their desirability. She also showed her discontent with the implication that dating could be compared to a playing field of all things.
However, all of the other female participants seemed to agree with the statement, and one of them even remarked that in the 30s, men always had the upper hand.
Seeing the scene unfold while sitting in the studio, MC Kyung Li agreed with the first girl, saying it is impossible to not say anything when someone talks about the “balance scale tipping” for women. However, Jo Hyunah, the co-MC, surprisingly agreed with the statement, joking that her “personal scale” has definitely tipped over.
She then went on talking about how she preferred sons over daughters because, to her, “Men are like the heavens.” The singer then acknowledged her own outdated mindset saying she is still in the Joseon era.
Netizens were highly turned off by this comment and felt that even if she said it as a joke, it was made in bad taste. Some even reached out to her through Instagram direct messages, but the singer didn’t apologize for the remarks. Instead, she responded by saying that if she had attitude issues or other problems with her values, she wouldn’t have lasted in the industry so long after debuting in 2007. She also posted a story threatening to take legal action against malicious rumors, false information, and any mention of her past controversies.
