SBS‘s upcoming documentary Bodymentary—Confessions About Weight, some of the pioneering figures from the K-Pop industry will share their struggles to fit into the impossible standards imposed on female idols. These confessions echo current idols’ ongoing struggles and offer a range of perspectives from different eras.
One of the stars included in the documentary is singer Kim Wan Sun. She debuted in 1986 and was known for her sexy dancing and stage presence, earning comparisons to Madonna.
The star was a sex symbol as a result, something that is not necessarily a negative thing when it is wanted.
However, it seems her status resulted in issues with her weight and image that led to some extreme diet choices.
As part of the preview for the upcoming program, Kim Wan Sun talked about her past, revealing that she ate so little that her colleagues would wish to see her eat.
I couldn’t eat properly for so long that my colleagues would say, ‘Our wish is to see her eat a meal.’

She also stated that she got into a serious car accident but was already back on stage the following week, showing just how hard her body was being pushed. Kim Wan Sun admitted that she would only eat an ice cream or biscuit before performances, and her weight once dropped to the 30kg (around 66 lbs) range.
The program, which also features Hwasa, Hyosung, SISTAR‘s Soyou , and KARA‘s Seungyeon (also known as Youngji), is set to air on December 8.
