New Sapphic K-Drama? “Pyramid Game” Viewers Are Shipping Two GL Couples

Recently, the new TVING K-Drama Pyramid Game, adapted from the Naver Webtoon of the same by Dalgonyak, premiered on February 29.
This ongoing Korean psychological thriller survival television series was created by Lee Jae Gyun, written by Choi Soo I, and directed by Park So Yeon. It stars WJSN (Cosmic Girl)’s Bona, Ryu Da In, Shin Seul Ki, and Kang Na Eon. Jang Da Ah, who is IVE Jang Wonyoung‘s older sister, and Single’s Inferno 2 star Shin Seul Ki are both making their acting debuts in the K-Drama.
Once a month, students at Baekyeon Girls’ High School cast their votes in a popularity poll. The result? A brutal ranking system that determines the entire social hierarchy of the school. Sung Su Ji has just transferred and scores a zero. After starting at the bottom and becoming a target of school violence, can Su Ji make her way to the top of the pyramid? Or will she topple the game altogether?

Since its premiere, viewers have been introduced to the main characters’ new versions. So far, they are pleasantly surprised by the LGBTQIA+ representation, while it’s not officially classified as a GL (Girl Love) drama.
Viewers have taken notice of the sapphic vibes between Im Ye Rim, played by Kang Na Eon (Crash Course in Romance and Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938), and Sim Eun Jung (also romanized as Shim Eun Jeong), played by Lee Ju Yeon (Flower of Evil and SKY Castle) especially. Ye Rim is an idol trainee, while Eun Jung is a member of the national swimming team. While Eun Jung appears cold but blunt, she is only interested in Ye Rim, and the feelings appear mutual.
Throughout the episodes released so far, Ye Rim and Eun Jung get jealous because of each other. There’s so much tension some viewers have even wondered if they would soon kiss.

Technically, they have shared an indirect kiss… In one scene, the two share a drink. Eun Jung hesitated, looking at Ye Rim’s lipstick stain on the can before drinking.

Yet, they also share heartwarming moments that indicate their true feelings. For instance, when Ye Rim took a nap on her shared desk with Eun Jung, Eun Jung moved to block the sunlight from shining on Ye Rim, who was resting.

These gestures weren’t unnoticed by just viewers but also by other students. Transfer student Seong Su Ji (Bona) confronted Ye Rim, initially questioning whether Ye Rim likes her. She realized it was not her that Ye Rim likes but Eun Jung. Ye Rim doesn’t deny her feelings for Eun Jung either.

Su Ji herself has a potential love interest in classmate Myeong Ja Eun, played by Ryu Da In (Crash Course in Romance). Viewers can’t help but ship these two, as they, too, share heart-fluttering moments.

However, the original Webtoon didn’t contain as much sapphic vibes. In both versions, Su Ji and Ja Eun, as well as Ye Rim and Eun Jung, are essentially “best friends,” but the K-Drama so far implies the girls’ feelings might be beyond that.
Regardless, viewers are loving the sapphic vibes and representation thus far in the adaptation. As there are more episodes to come, time will only tell if any of these potential couples will be endgame!
