Singer UMI Gets Bombarded With Hate Comments For Interacting With “Ship” Account Of BTS’s V And BLACKPINK’s Jennie

She has responded to the comments in a new video.

Singer UMI, who collaborated with BTS membe V on the song “Wherever U R,” was recently targeted with hate comments after being accused of “clout chasing” using the BTS member.

The controversy sprouted from a TikTok video posted by the singer where she lipsynced to BLACKPINK member Jennie‘s “Love Hangover.” UMI’s rendition received praises on the platform, with many suggesting she make a full cover of the song. But some read into the video, associating it with the dating rumors between Jennie and V, which took the internet by storm in 2023.

The fire was fueled even further by a specific comment under UMI’s video. A user praised her for the song choice, to which she responded with a few happy emojis. Though the exchange was fairly tame, many took an objection with it since the account UMI replied to was a “ship” account of Jennie and V.

This invited quite the vitriol against the singer, with many accusing her of trying to chase clout using the dating rumors between the two idols. The hate comments got so intense that the singer eventually addressed the issue in a new TikTok video.

UMI explained that she had no other intention behind covering the song, adding that she never likes prying into the personal lives of the artists she collaborates with and hence was unaware of the rumors to begin with. She clarified that she thought the comment was praising her song choice, and responded to it from that interpretation.

To assume that I know something, to assume that I’m clout-chasing, or that I’m trying to make something happen…it’s just an assumption, and it’s a storyline that you’re creating…that’s not what creativity is about and that’s not what mutual respect is about…Any type of hype that’s been created from this conversation is not because I created it, it’s because you’re circulating a misunderestanding.

Finally, the singer put an end to the discourse saying, “Creating music and collaboration especially is not about drama starting, it’s not about division. It’s about sharing and appreciating each other’s art.”

BTS fans have rallied behind UMI and shown her support against the hate comments and have intesnsely criticized the harassment she faced to end up making a response video.
