SM Entertainment’s Actions Scrutinized In The Wake Of Former NCT Member Taeil’s Rape Charge
SM Entertainment‘s actions have resurfaced in the wake of former NCT member Taeil‘s aggravated rape charge.
On October 7, 2024 (KST), Taeil was reportedly formally charged with aggravated rape.
Taeil’s reported charge under investigation is, in Korean, “Special Quasi-Rape.” According to Korean law, the term “special” indicates that it was aggravated—meaning that it either involved weapon(s) or, in his case, more than two people. The term “quasi” indicates that the victim was unconscious and/or unable to resist. His charge in the US would most accurately be referred to as “aggravated rape.” The charge carries a sentence of 7 years or more.

Amid the news, SM Entertainment’s actions when first learning of Taeil’s crimes have resurfaced. An article has since gone viral in which it asks “Is This Why SM Entertainment Kept This On The Hush-Hush?” in its title.
Netizens have since reacted to the news article, with many defending the label. Famously, SM Entertainment first indicated the seriousness of the crimes when it announced it was cutting ties with the idol.
