On the 25th of August 2020, it was reported by dramaland representatives that Son Ye Jin and Kang Ha Neul have been casted as the leads in new sageuk drama, Pyeonggang, Cut by the Heart (working title).
The drama is based on the story of Princess Pyeonggang and Pabo Ondal, a traditional tale carried down in South Korea, based on the true events of Princess Pyeonggang, who was married off to a hunchbacked commoner, Ondal. Ondal was referred to by the public as Pabo Ondal, or Ondal the Fool. The drama is set to tell the sad and tragic love story between the two.
Son Ye Jin will play Princess Pyeonggang (ceremonial name), Go Ji Oh, who is the eldest daughter of King Pyeongwon of Goguryeo Kingdom. She is known to be a cry-baby princess, which causes her father to constantly threaten to marry her off the Ondal the village fool. Her mother passes away when she is 10, leaving her with advice to become the best princess loved by the kingdom. She refuses to get married to nobleman Go In Sang and eventually marries Ondal instead.
Kang Ha Neul will play Ondal the fool, who lives in a hut in the mountains with his elderly mother. He meets Ondal and they later live together in the hut after marriage. She helps him find his ambitions and true self, helping him to become the kingdom’s most successful general and wins the approval of the king.
It has been updated that both actors’ agencies have responded saying they have received the offers but have yet to confirm the acceptance.
Not much is known about the rest of the cast or the release date so far. Son Ye Jin saw success with her recent flick, Crash Landing On You, while Kang Ha Neul’s acting received rave reviews with When The Camellia Blooms.
