Actor Song Joong Ki recently hosted the 26th Busan International Film Festival alongside actress Park So Dam at the Busan Cinema Center! Of course, the festival could not go on without talking about the insanely popular Squid Game!
During the “Open Talk” for his movie Space Sweepers, Song Joong Ki brought up Netflix‘s Squid Game and how popular it really is. Song Joong Ki shared that while traveling abroad to film Bogota, he rode a small plane that didn’t carry many people.
While on the plane, Song Joong Ki shared that almost everyone boarding was downloading Squid Game on their phone to watch during their plane ride.
Last week, I went overseas to film for ‘Bogota.’ I went to an island in Europe, but the plane to the island was small. Around me, three foreigners were downloading and watching ‘Squid Game.’

Song Joong Ki then expressed that the popularity of Korean content such as Squid Game or his film Space Sweepers has made him feel very proud.
Back when Space Sweepers ranked on Netflix’s Top 10, I read articles about the accomplishment. But to be honest, I couldn’t really believe that it had actually become successful around the world. Besides, I was worried that some of the Korean cultural sentiments from the movie might not deliver to the international viewers. So I felt extra proud when I saw with my own eyes that these locals are actually watching and praising Korean content.

Not only did I feel extremely happy, but I also felt a sense of responsibility to continue making good shows.
