In a now-viral clip, Song Joong Ki is seen being interviewed in China.

In the clip, Song Joong Ki was asked about splitting his time being a father while working as an actor.

Your movie has been premiered at Cannes while your baby is on the way. The Chinese have this saying, “A double harvest in work and family life.” What do you think about the relationship between the two?

The clip ends after Song Joong Ki states in English that it was inevitable that he would lose roles because of his new status as a father.

Sometimes, being a father, being a husband, that means losing a job in this business. Being a father and having a baby, and a marriage with a woman, in this business, sometimes, it looks like [I’m] losing my job more and more. [sic]

Netizens criticized the actor for his statement, with many citing the fact that male actors aren’t nearly as affected as their women counterparts. Unfortunately, in Korea, women actors lose both roles and popularity after getting married.

Now, more information has been released about the interview. The actor’s full interview has been uploaded to a now-viral post. In the new video, Song Joong Ki seems to take a step back from his previous claim by conceding that not all actors lose roles but that they are affected differently, “Case by case.”

Yes, case by case, okay, But I am not afraid about this. I don’t care.

— Song Joong Ki

The actor also states that although his family is his first priority, he loves his job and states he can be both an actor and a family man.

For me, family is always much important than work. But I love my job, and then I’ll do my effort always for myself and for my family. I can be a good actor, and then I can be a human as a father, as a husband, and as a son. So I can do it like both. [sic]

Netizens reacted to the new revelation. While some felt the criticism was unwarranted, many maintained that the actor’s comments were careless.

  • “He’s seriously so careless.”
  • “Also, top male actors do not lose jobs because they are married… Unless they commit a crime.”
  • “His acting in Reborn Rich ㅠ.”
  • “He should accept the fact that his job might change as he ages, but it is incorrect for him to say that he is going to lose jobs.”
  • “Is this something he should be canceled over?”
  • “I think I am going to die from his ego.”
  • “The comments here are going overboard.”
