South Korean National Team Figure Skating Athletes Suspended For Sexual Harassment Within The Team
It was recently reported that figure skating athletes from the national team of South Korea were under investigation for not only violating athlete codes, but also for sexual harassment.
In May 2024, a group of athletes were sent overseas for training. This included a mix of minors and adult athletes. It was reported that three athletes were caught consuming alcohol in the dorms. Not only this, but a male athlete was caught entering the female dorms. Both acts violated the athlete code of conduct during training.
A later report on June 22, 2024, revealed that skaters A and B had drunk several times during the training. C, who is a male athlete, had trespassed into the female dormitories. There, A, who is a female athlete, had reportedly acted in a way that made C sexually uncomfortable. A was eventually given a 3 year suspension by the sports union for her actions. B was suspended for a year. It was reported that B took sexually offensive photos of A. As a result, A will not be able to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. On the other hand, C, who did not drink but trespassed into the female dorms, was put on probation instead.
The news is especially disappointing to South Koreans as national support for figure skaters is uncommon. The overseas training was sponsored by the government this time, in a rare occurrence.
