“Squid Game” Jung Ho Yeon Praised For Incorporating Korean Culture Into Her Outfit At The Screen Actors Guild Awards
On February 27, the Squid Game cast won big in the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards! The Netflix K-Drama was nominated in several categories in the prestigious award show and took home not one, not two, but three awards.
Yet, even before the awards started, the cast of the hit show gained attention for their glamorous outfits looks. As expected, lead actress Jung Ho Yeon stunned fans from the second she stepped onto the red carpet.
The model wowed wearing a Louis Vuitton custom-made dress and Louis Vuitton shoes, along with earrings and rings from Louis Vuitton High Jewelry Collection. According to sources, it took over 210 hours to create Jung Ho Yeon’s unique dress.
Yet, although it is aesthetically beautiful, fans were amazed to find out that all the details were intentional and showcased Jung Ho Yeon’s pride in being Korean.
During the event’s red carpet, Jung Ho Yeon spoke to E! Entertainment all about her thoughts on the show’s success, how she coped with the intensity of the show, and much more.
In particular, the host shone a light on just how beautiful Jung Ho Yeon looked during the ceremony. Despite the beauty of the outfit, Jung Ho Yeon revealed that she wanted to bring a piece of Korea with her to the show and incorporate it into her look.
So I wanted to create a look that was very glamorous but also mixed in Korean traditional aspects as well.
— Jung Ho Yeon
At first, it might not seem obvious, but Jung Ho Yeon explained that it was all in the detail of her hairpiece that was so important.
We actually made this daenggi, it’s a hairpiece they created that for us, and for that look.
— Jung Ho Yeon
A daenggi is a traditional Korean ribbon used to tie up and decorate braided hair and is an accessory that has been used to decorate braided hair in Korea for centuries. Despite the beauty of the dress, it is hard not to praise the details and thought that has gone into Jung ho Yeon’s look, especially as it shows that she wants to represent Korea on a global stage.
In an interview with Vogue, celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho reveals how it felt to be able to incorporate the daenggi into Jung Ho Yeon’s look.
I can’t hide the fact that I was very emotional to be the one to style her hair into a modern version of the sleek traditional Korean braids and to put the daenggi into Hoyeon’s hair. It was sincerely one of the most special glam moments to remember.
— Jenny Cho
When the video was released, fans online couldn’t stop praising Jung Ho Yeon for her choice in fashion and the meaning behind it.
Just realized, Hoyeon hairdo looks like the joseon hairstyle kwimmit meori/귀밑머리. With daenggi, the ribbon tied at the end of it. The style for unmarried women.pic.twitter.com/fgvalLkk5B
