“Squid Game” Continues To Break Records As It Takes The #1 Spot On The U.S. Top 10 Ranking
Netflix‘s Squid Game is continuing to take the world by storm, despite having only been released just a few days ago. The 9-episode series has been making headline after headline, as the unique plot and intense storyline continues to captivate audiences worldwide. And while a Korean production doing well on Netflix is not new news, Squid Game has taken it to a whole different level with its recent ranking.
Just four days after its premiere on the streaming giant, it’s been revealed that Squid Game has officially taken the number one spot on the U.S. top 10 ranking.
According to Flix Patrol, a streaming ratings website, Squid Game is also currently ranked #2 worldwide for the Top TV Shows as of September 21, 2021 — which is the highest ranking ever recorded by a Korean drama. The thriller series is right below Sex Education, as it only trails behind by 31 points.
According to Business Insider, Netflix determines their top 10 ranking using a specific viewership metric system, which is based on the country you are located in. Not only do they count how many views each production receives, but each view for a show or movie is only considered “if an account watches at least two minutes of a movie or series.”
This means that the top 10 ranking is different by each country since it is solely based on the preferences for each nation. And while it’s not completely unusual for Korean productions to perform well in the U.S. on the streaming platform, it does come as a bit of surprise that a Korean series has taken the top spot within the U.S.
This isn’t to say that foreign shows have never taken this highly coveted number one spot. Previously, the Mexican mystery series Who Killed Sara?, the Spanish heist series Money Heist, and the French thriller series Lupin have all taken number one on the U.S. top 10 ranking.
And as Squid Game continues to impress with such high numbers, it keeps the anticipation and expectation at an all time high. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for this Korean thriller series.
