The Two Types Of Songs TREASURE Recommends YG Trainees Sing At Their Monthly Evaluations
TREASURE recently made a comeback with “BONA BONA.” They appeared on popular YouTube channel MMTG to promote their song, touring MC JaeJae around YG Entertainment.
They answered her many company-related questions. One of them was the song she should sing in her pretend monthly evaluation, something that all trainees have to go through until they’re chosen to debut.
What kind of song should I prepare?
— JaeJae
Jihoon, Jaehyuk, Junkyu, and Jeongwoo gave her their own personal takes. Check them out below!
1. A Senior’s Song
First up, one suggestion was to cover a song from BLACKPINK, the most highly recognized group in the company. Composed of Jennie, Jisoo, Rosé, and Lisa, they have a plethora of hits dating from their debut in 2016.
Maybe a song by the most famous group of our company, BLACKPINK.
— Jaehyuk
Though any BLACKPINK song would be trendy and on-brand, Jihoon warned that the trainee could be easily compared to the singers themselves. Their weaknesses “may show even more” since the evaluators are close to the original artists professionally and personally.
There is a risk in that as well: comparison. The people watching you formed BLACKPINK and helped them grow.
— Jihoon
2. An American Soloist
Following this idea, MC JaeJae revealed that she wanted to cover the iconic K-Pop song “Paparazzi” by Kan Mi Youn. Though the members loved the track as well, they admitted that the bubble gum pop tune did not fit the style of YG Entertainment.
Rather, most trainees tend to pick songs by American soloists. Though old, they match the laid-back and “swaggy” style of the company well.
At YG, most people sing Ne-Yo, Trey Songz, and Usher.
— Jihoon
TREASURE went so far as to say that trainees who do not think these songs complement them are singers who don’t fit the quintessential “YG style.”
