TripleS’s Creative Process Is Getting Flamed Following Worrying Messages From Yooyeon
On June 13, it was announced that rookie girl group tripleS would be debuting a new sub-unit called Visionary Vision. The line-up will consist of 12 of the 24 members of tripleS, including two pre-selected members (Yubin and Lynn) as well as 10 others who would be selected through fan voting. The unit will be dance-focused, with keywords “Hi-Tech Dance”, “Boyish”, and “Level Up” used to describe it.

As with pretty much everything that tripleS does, the members of the sub-unit are being determined through fan voting, a method that is unique to the K-Pop group. Fans earn voting tokens called “COMO” by purchasing NFT photocards known as “Objekts”, and they use these tokens to vote for and influence different aspects of tripleS’s production. Yesterday, the 12 members of Visionary Vision were revealed after the results of this voting were tallied.

This voting method has already been met with skepticism by many, as it seems like it could easily become a popularity contest that could then lead to animosity and jealousy among the members. There are already some members who are very clearly fan favorites, and one such member actually sparked a renewed conversation about the group’s creative process.
Recently, Yooyeon was talking to fans over a messaging app about the upcoming Visionary Vision sub-unit. This was prior to the line-up being chosen for the unit, around the time that fans could vote for who they wanted to see in the group. Though Yooyeon doesn’t have the position of a dancer in the group (such as fellow members Nakyoung, Sohyun, and Jiyeon), she expressed her desire to be in Visionary Vision to fans.
Some people think that it was due to these messages that Yooyeon ended up with enough votes to make it into the unit’s line-up, even though she’s not technically part of the group’s dance line.
Fortunately, it seems that criticism is being directed at the group’s voting system rather than Yooyeon herself following the reveal of these messages. Many don’t think it’s fair to create sub-units through what seems to essentially be popularity contests, and that it’s simply a way for their label to make more money from fans.
Here’s what people are saying regarding the situation.
Do you think this method will end up being sustainable in the long run, or will changes need to be made eventually?
