Solo Versus Group: These Are The Challenges TWICE’s Nayeon Faced When Recording “IM NAYEON” Without Her Members
TWICE‘s Nayeon recently made her solo debut with her album IM NAYEON.
In an interview with ELLE, Nayeon touched on the difference between making an album as a soloist and as a member of a girl group. She was the first of the nine members to promote her own music.
The first thing that stood out to her was the atmosphere in the recording studio. As the only artist headlining each song, she had full responsibility of each part.
The energy is very different! The most important thing is that I don’t try to fill the gap of the other eight members, but rather I think of it as completely different work.
The challenge is thinking of it with a completely different mindset. When I’m preparing for an album, there are times when I have to make a decision, and there are times when I have to give up on certain things.

When recording with TWICE, she could rely on her group mates to back her up and speak their thoughts alongside her. This often gave her more self-assurance as an artist.
With the members, there are eight other members who have the same thoughts as me and who want the same things as me. So when I’m doubting myself, I have them to back me up.

In the end, there is more pressure to do well by herself. As a soloist, Nayeon learned to be more confident in what she wants to hear in her music.
When I’m working by myself, I feel more pressure to be responsible for my own decisions. I have to be really sure of myself, and that can be a challenge!
