TWICE Is Being Praised For Their Groundbreaking “No Makeup” Music Video Teaser — But Not Everyone Is A Fan
Although K-Pop is an extremely visual industry, idols have become more confident in showcasing their looks without all the makeup and styling. TWICE is no exception!
Over the years, TWICE has never been afraid to show ONCEs the real them, without makeup and all the glamor of K-Pop.
After so long in the industry and showing fans all sides to them, TWICE really stripped back and returned to basics in their recent teaser for their track “SET ME FREE.”
In the teaser, various brands of makeup are shown on the dressing table of a TWICE member until the makeup cleanser comes out and the eyelashes come off.
The members are then seen physically taking off, wiping, and removing any makeup they wear, showcasing the members’ stunning and barefaced visuals.
At the end, all the members come together looking flawless in simple white outfits and without any makeup.
When the teaser was released, international netizens couldn’t stop praising the members of TWICE for their “Refreshing” concept. While K-Pop is an industry based on image, especially for female idols, fans loved how empowering the teaser was.
there's so much debate about the best makeup for female idols in korea and twice just said "how about no makeup?" I LOVE WOMENpic.twitter.com/h0amNXemSC

MY JAW IS ON THE FLOOR. TWICE shedding their makeup, wiping off their lipstick and removing their eyelash extensions… Showing us the REAL YOU where your natural beauty just shines so brightly… I absolutely love this concept! So bold, confident and refreshing ❤️ it’s like a CM!! pic.twitter.com/LB23iFETL9

no, because not all artists will film a music video with no makeup on especially k-artists bc of those shitty beauty standards that were set in the korean industry…twice is so smart for this

Yet, while international netizens were obsessed with the message behind TWICE’s teaser, some Korean netizens had mixed views toward the styling. While some thought “Barefaced” visuals were for rookie idols, while others shared the hardships of being a female idol by coming under scrutiny for every decision.
- No, these bare-faced (no makeup) concepts are for idols who have just debuted when they are doing concepts such as … innocent, young girl, student, ㅠㅠㅠㅠ The longer you’ve been in the industry, you should put on full makeup to make yourself seem invincible (like you’re the best).”
- “The comment on the bottom must have been written by a psycho, LOL. You think that way because you aren’t happy with the way you look… I am not a TWICE fan, but do you know they performed live at the Billboards Women (Awards? doesn’t give full name). It must be so tiring being a female idol.”
- “I didn’t feel like the barefaced trailer was pretty. It just reminds me how old they are and how many years they’ve been in the industry. I’m not sure why they are pushing this concept. I really can’t understand it.”
It seems as if netizens have mixed views, as the concept is unique and definitely a far cry from what they are used to seeing. However, it’s impossible not to praise TWICE for being honest with their concept and standing up against toxic Korean beauty standards.
